The decision by TATA group to suspend all work at its plant at Singur has evoked sharp reactions from the industry.
The political class, on the other hand has been rather ambivalent on the matter. Union Commerce Minister Kamal Nath, who so far has maintained that this was an internal matter of the West Bengal Government, is now making an open offer to the TATAs to come and set up the plant to manufacture Nano in Madhya Pradesh. "The Central Government can't do much about it, as it matter of state government and the company. If TATAs want to come to Madhya Pradesh, we will give them full assistance," Nath says. While Nath may have making a pitch keeping in mind the Madhya Pradesh elections, no other leader of the Congress has spoken out so far on the matter. Meanwhile, the West Bengal's Left Government is blaming Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee for TATA's decision to pull out its staff from the Singur plant. The West Bengal Industries Minister Nirupam Sen said, "If TATAs pulls out of Singur, it will send a wrong signal about West Bengal." Click On "Full Story" For More...
Sen also said Mamata's demand for return of land is absurd and illegal. Mamata on the other hand is blaming the state government and she is also expecting some resolution to come out because of the West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi's mediation.
Governor Gandhi met with Trinamool leaders and Chief Minister Budhadeb Bhattacharjee on Tuesday to discuss the issue. The Trinamool, however, insists it was never against the TATAs and Mamata has asked the suppliers to respect democratic movement. "The Governor has taken the initiative and we welcome the move. I request the TATAs to tell their suppliers that they need to respect the democratic movement," Mamata said. The company, in a press release issued on Tuesday, said it is now exploring alternate options for manufacturing the Nano car at other company facilities. In a strongly worded statement, the TATAs stated: "TATA Motors Ltd has been constrained to suspend the work at the Nano Plant in Singur in view of continued agitation. The company is evaluating options for manufacturing the Nano car at other company facilities." "This is absolutely their internal and technical matter. We don't have any comments about that," Mamata had reacted about TATAs decision to suspend work at it Singur plant. Source: IBNlive.com 03/Sep/2008 |
