With several senior leaders vying for the top slot, Congress is hesitant in naming its chief ministerial candidate in Madhya Pradesh in an apparent move to take all groups together.
Union Minister Kamal Nath was sought to be projected for the high office sometime back but the AICC has frowned upon such attempts. AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh who has created a record by being the Chief Minister of the state for 10 long years from 1993 to 2003, has been saying he wanted to continue in national politics. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia is also considered a serious contender given his youthful image and the support he enjoys in the Gwalior region. But a section of the party recall that almost on all occasions, party chief Sonia Gandhi has given the green signal in favour of the PCC chief to be made the Chief Minister, when the party has won elections.
This is good news for MPCC chief Suresh Pachouri, a known loyalist, who has been given the responsibility of leading the party in an election year, replacing Subhash Yadav. Pachouri, who has been president of Seva Dal for a considerable period of time, has so far remained in national politics, and has spent over two decades in Rajya Sabha.
